Rev. Carl Wayne Scott Gilliard is a respected pastor, community leader, and humanitarian dedicated to transforming lives and strengthening communities. A native of Savannah, Georgia, he was educated in the Chatham County School System and attended Morris Brown College in Atlanta, where his lifelong commitment to service began.
Early in his career, Rev. Gilliard served as a national youth coordinator for presidential candidate Rev. Jesse Jackson. During this time, he was mentored by civil rights icon Rev. Dr. Hosea Williams and worked alongside influential leaders such as Rev. Dr. Ralph Abernathy, Rev. Joseph Lowery, Coretta Scott King, and others—experiences that helped shape his passion for leadership and social impact.
Returning to Savannah with a mission to address youth violence and community challenges, Rev. Gilliard launched several groundbreaking initiatives. He founded Project L.O.V.E., Inc., the Chatham County Youth Commission, the Saturday Morning Academy, and the Savannah Drama Club—programs that empowered thousands of young people. He also formed “Candylove,” one of the nation’s first positive rap groups, which used music as a platform for advocacy and public service, partnering with national campaigns and organizations.
Rev. Gilliard has remained a powerful force in community development, leading anti-crime initiatives, serving on the Children’s Task Force on Violence, and championing unity efforts throughout the region. His voice has also reached audiences through media as a longtime radio host, television personality, writer, and producer, including becoming the first African American writer for Connect Savannah and creating nationally recognized gospel stage productions.
In 1995, he answered the call to ministry and was later appointed President of the Georgia Coastal Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC). He has served as pastor and spiritual leader, guiding congregations and communities with faith and purpose.
As the founder of Feed the Hungry, Inc., Rev. Gilliard leads a nonprofit that has served over 450,000 meals and operates across multiple cities in Georgia and South Carolina. He also established the Family Life Center, a community hub providing after-school programs, food assistance, re-entry support, and family services.
An entrepreneur and visionary, Rev. Gilliard founded Urban Media and the Gilliard Foundation, producing impactful media focused on history, culture, and community awareness.
